PART TWO: CHOOSING A STYLE FOR YOUR GARDEN

MEDITERRANEAN GARDENS

Mediterranean gardens are created so that we can grow the more exotic sun-loving, dry-garden plants.

There is unlikely to be a lawn in a Mediterranean garden and, if there is one, it won't be a dominant feature. Seating areas are hard-paved and stone furniture looks best. Gravel will feature strongly because it will make full use of the sun by reflecting it back onto the plants.

Blue - to invoke the colour of the sea - should be used for both containers and flowering plants. Use plenty of containers and accessories in the Mediterranean garden. Accessories are stone and buildings, fences and walls are whitewashed.

Planting in the Mediterranean garden will consist of featured, architectural plants which are surrounded by a gravel mulch to show them off. You can also use herbs such as thyme, lavender, oregano and bay. Flowering plants will have strong colours - hot yellows and reds and cool blues but show off flowering plants to their full extent by grouping them together amongst rivers of pale gravel.

In the summer, plant up loads of terra cotta pots with pelargoniums and place them around your patios to remind you of a Spanish terrace.
