PART TWO: CHOOSING A STYLE FOR YOUR GARDEN

TRADITIONAL GARDENS

Traditional gardens usually contain a lawn, a place to sit and borders of some description.

Their design is relatively simple and the traditional garden has stood the test of time for just that reason - its simplicity and clean lines work well for just about everyone's lifestyle.

If you choose a traditional garden style you will almost certainly have a lawn as the main central feature, mixed borders will surround the lawn and you may also have island borders cut into the lawn if it's big enough. Your sitting area will usually be hard-paved but you could also slip a deck into a traditional garden without compromising the design.

Planting in the traditional garden usually consists of plants which are suited to the British climate and, as such, the plants should pretty much look after themselves. Choose popular small trees such as some of the Ornamental Cherries and Hawthorn beside shrubs like Hydrangea, Cotoneaster, Hardy Fuschia, Roses and Laurels. Throw in some herbaceous perennials - Day Lillies, Columbines, Irises and the like and you have a garden that will put up with almost anything.
