PART ONE: DRAWING UP A WISHLIST

LAWNS AND GRAVEL

Lawns

Like a carpet in a room, lawns really pull a garden design together and you always get a more natural look when you include a lawn of some description.

Children and pets will really appreciate a lawn to play on.

You can have a really formal, well-clipped lawn or just a hard-wearing all-purpose turf which you keep in trim once a fortnight. If you want to encourage wildlife to your garden, you could leave part of your lawn to grow longer and plant a few wild flowers for a mini meadow.

If your garden is poor-draining then a lawn drainage system below your new lawn is essential.

Gravel

Using gravel in place of a lawn works best in smaller gardens but it does mean you will have lower maintenance.

If you want to use gravel in place of a lawn, try to mix different gravel colours or grades and consider planting into the gravel for a softer look.
