PART ONE: DRAWING UP A WISHLIST

WATER

Water can add a really dynamic element to your garden design. You can use it for growing plants, to create reflection, to keep fish, for leisure or just to enjoy the sound of it.

Ponds

A planted pond attracts all kinds of wildlife and, of course, if you make it deep enough, you can even keep fish. If you are clever with your design and planting, you can use your pond as a mirror to reflect specimen plants and other garden elements. They are not a good idea if you have young children. You need a level site for a pond and, to lessen maintenance, it should be away from trees.

Water features

If you want to hear the calming sound of running water, you can install a water feature without the pond. You can make your own using a water pump and reservoir or there are loads of complete sets to choose from at your local garden centre depending on your preferred style.

A self-contained water feature is a good choice if you have young children but still want to have water in your design. Don't forget you will need a power supply and this should be installed by a suitably qualified person.

Streams and cascades

Streams and cascades can make really good use of a sloping site but unless you absolutely must have one, trying to create one on a primarily level site can look a little too man-made.

Hot tubs and pools

Hot tubs are a lot more affordable than they used to be and whether you house them under cover or out in the open, a hot tub can bring a touch of opulence to your garden design. Don't forget, it will take quite a bit of power to keep them heated and there is a fair amount of maintenance involved.

If you have the space and the budget, you could install a pool out in the open to use in the summertime. If you don't have good enough weather, your pool could be housed in a glasshouse or large summer house. The pool will have to be installed by qualified technicians and initial outlay as well as maintenance costs are likely to be considerable. Above ground pools are available but can be a little unattractive.
